KATE + MARK / POWNAL, MAINE

Kate and Mark met at ZuzuBar’s soul music night in Cambridge near Boston, MA. That’s where they began fall in love with each other. Kate and Mark were 7,000 miles apart when they planned their wedding. She was teaching in South Korea. He was on a contract in South Carolina. Both have a passion for community, education, and the outdoors.

Claire, a friend of mine who is Kate’s high school friend, introduced us. We were living 12 miles off the coast of Rockland, Maine, on the island of North Haven. I was commercial lobstering. Claire was co-founding Fox I Printworks.

“Jump in. We’re heading to the beach to bbq and watch the sunset.” Away we went in Claire’s antique Toyota 4-Runner to celebrate her half-birthday. She’s classy like that.

Kate and Mark were married on her family’s property in Pownal, Maine, located thirty minutes north of Maine’s largest city, Portland. The landscape was beautiful with farms and smells of summer in every direction. Mark readied himself at the Kendall Tavern Inn, a lovely bed and breakfast restored from an early 1800’s farmhouse located the heart of Freeport, Maine.

An artist, Kate hand-painted one-of-a-kind watercolor paper weathervanes as gifts for her and Mark’s families and friends. Excited to marry each other, Kate and Mark kissed each other halfway through the ceremony and began walking down the grassy field they were wed in, only to be called back by the priest saying there was more to finish. Who knew? Kate’s friend Tica played folk music. Mark’s friends had a flash mob on the dance floor. That’s love.

ELIZABETH & CHRIS

Chris and I went to college together and stayed good friends since our graduation in 2006, hiking Mount Katahdin a couple summers back. We both studied photojournalism and were passionate about image making since day one. An avid outdoorsman, Chris’ final project was a series of portraits on survivors, essentially folks whom had overcome a set of challenges and beat the odds. When he asked me to photograph he and his fiancée Lizzie’s wedding, I was very humbled.

I remember their wedding like it was yesterday. The beautiful October fall day still plants itself firmly in my mind. A slight, cool breeze ran across the landscape of large barn, farm pond, stream, covered bridge, and oceans views of Clark’s Cove Farm in Walpole, Maine. The leaves were doing what they do best, turning bright reds, oranges, yellows, and browns. Smells of wood fires and baked apple and pumpkin pies ran through the air.

Although Chris and Lizzie have climbed many mountains in their lives, including Chris as a talented photographer and Lizzie as a pediatric doctor, in my mind they climbed the ultimate mountain that afternoon: the commitment to unite with one another for the rest of their lives. So raise a glass, set your sights high, and celebrate their joyous day.

KARA & JAY

Although I commercial lobster during the spring, summer, and fall, I always take time off to photograph weddings. I like the balance of working on the ocean and photographing one of the most special day’s of a couples’ life together.

The third Saturday of July I made my way off North Haven and across the calm Penobscot Bay in my lobster-style boat to photograph Jay and Kara’s wedding with my friend and talented wedding videographer, Morgan Kirkham from Real Wedding Films. Morgan does the best wedding videography work in New England and is your go-to guy if you’re looking for video work.

Jay and Kara’s wedding was held on her family’s property consisting of a traditional New England house and dirt road that curved down to a quaint cottage on a lake in Bremen, Maine. I photographed the getting ready and ceremony aspects of their wedding, and later assisted Morgan with videography which can be seen at the bottom of this post.

Jay and Kara were my kind of folks: down to earth, kind, compassionate, and truly in love with each other. Jay’s high school band played Kara’s favorite song at the end of the night and we danced through the cool summer evening air. I can still feel it on my skin. Thanks, Jay and Kara.

(WEDDING) DAN + ANNE (VENTOSA VINEYARDS) GENEVA, NEW YORK

It’s 4 o’clock in the morning and I’m driving from my home in Camden, Maine to the Portland Airport for my flight to Syracuse to photograph Anne and Dan’s wedding.

Now I’m in the airplane. We’re taking off into a world of blue skies as the sun rises above the Atlantic Ocean. We’re heading towards John F. Kennedy Airport. The pilot comes on the radio and reports of heavy fog and rain in New York.

We do laps in the air and divert to Logan because we’re close to running out of fuel. We re-fuel and take off. Leaving Boston’s blue skies, we land at JFK, I miss my connection to Syracuse by 10 minutes, and I walk around the airport for awhile. I like walking through the airport, seeing so many faces, each one with it’s own story.

I make it to Syracuse 6 hours late, have a quick dinner with my mom and dad that still live in the house I grew up in with a white picket fence and grassy front yard, and make my way to Geneva, New York where I meet Amanda, an old high school friend, on the outskirts of Rochester close to where she lives with her husband, Andrew. We eat pizza, talk about life, her program, relationships, and laugh.

Now I’m waking up in the hotel room that Dan and Anne so graciously reserved for me. The sun is rising over Seneca Lake and I grab my camera as the world and myself begin to awake. In my mind I have this feeling that the day is going to be beautiful, special, unique in it’s own way like every wedding I photograph.

I meet Anne in her room. She’s getting ready with her bridesmaids and is calm as can be. We hug like old friends. You wouldn’t know it has been over 10 years since we’ve seen each other. I walk down the hallway with her to meet Dan. He’s getting ready with his groomsmen and, like Anne, is as calm as can be. We shake hands, have a few quick laughs, and the day begins.

Every wedding is an adventure. I’ll let the rest of Anne and Dan’s speak for itself.
